It’s been announced that a Wendy Williams biopic is in the works.

Today, Wendy is best-known for her self-titled chat show that airs in the US, but she got her start in American radio as a very specific kind of gossip queen, like a modern-day Hedda Hopper.

Now, it’s been reported that cable channel Lifetime has optioned the rights of a biopic for the controversial star, with actress Ciera Payton attached to portray Wendy.

Production on the film (with the working title Wendy Williams: The Hot Topic) is set to begin this month, helmed by director Darren Grant, with Wendy herself acting as executive producer of the project.

An official description (via Deadline) reads: ‘[The film will be a] a revealing look at Wendy’s journey, from her scrappy upstart days in urban radio to the success of her own syndicated talk show.’

Actress Porter is best-known for her roles in several films by American star Tyler Perry, who is credited with discovering her and casting her in comedies like She’s Gotta Have It and A Madea Family Funeral.

Empire actor Morocco Omari will also play Wendy’s ex-husband, Kevin Hunter.

Following the airing of the biopic, Williams will sit down with cameras for her very own feature-length documentary, talking viewers through her rise to stardom.

At the start of her career, Williams calved out a nice for herself as a ‘shock jockette’ at various New York radio stations, such as WEPN-FM and WBLS, where she hosted a nationally-syndicated show,

Some of her most notorious spats have included the likes of the late Whitney Houston and rapper 50 Cent.

Since 2008, the star has hosted The Wendy Williams Show through Fox and BET. Today, the chat show proudly presents the live studio audience as Williams’ ‘co-hosts’ and is best known for its Hot Topics segment.

Despite production of its latest season being derailed due to the coronavirus pandemic, Williams recently announced the show will return to screens this month.
