LAKE COUNTY — A year ago today in Lake County high school sports, the Upper Lake volleyball teams opened their North Central League II schedule against Calistoga, the varsity a bit understrength with two starters out of action.

Until the COVID-19-delayed 2020-21 sports season gets underway, which isn’t expected to occur until Dec. 14 at the earliest, the Lake County Record-Bee will take a look back at the high school happenings of a year ago and the teams and athletes who were making the headlines a year ago today.

With two of its top players — Seneca Snow and Colene Pulido — unable to go against Calistoga in league-opening action, the Cougars had to turn to their underclassmen in a 27-25, 16-25, 25-14, 25-18 loss.

Two freshmen helped Upper Lake win the second set. Maria Wade reeled off 10 straight service points while Madison Noble served nine in a row. Veteran Kaila Willard led the Cougars with nine kills.

It was better news for the Upper Lake JV squad in a 25-20, 25-11 win over Calistoga. Hayleigh Sertich led the team with eight aces and Heaven’Lee Loans Arrow finished with six kills.

Upper Lake’s varsity would go on to finish 7-9 in the NCL II standings and 8-18 overall. The Cougars never quite figured out the Wildcats, going 0-3 against them during the 2019 campaign.
