WIAA STATE TOURNAMENT’
KOHLER – Xavier’s Erika Curtin finished in second place in singles at the WIAA Division 2 state meet Saturday.
Curtin, a senior, lost to Baluck Deang of Edgewood Sacred Heart 6-3, 7-5 in the championship match at Sports Core.
Deang, who won the Division 2 singles title for the second year in a row, rallied from a 5-3 deficit in the second set to pull out the straight-sets victory.
Curtin was playing in a state final for the second year in a row. Last fall, she won the Division 2 state title in doubles with teammate Ellie Macksood.
Curtin advanced to the championship match with a 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-1 victory over Emily Gauger of Big Foot/Williams Bay in a semifinal match Saturday morning.
Xavier’s doubles team of Kylie McCormick and Bella Taleon also took second place. They lost in the championship match 7-5, 7-5 against Kala Siddalingaiah and Rebecca Draskal of University School of Milwaukee.
McCormick and Taleon won their semifinal match 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 against Cassie Warren and Sarah Hoffe of Onalaska Luther.
Fox Valley Lutheran’s Olivia Pethan was still alive in the consolation singles bracket with a chance to finish in fifth place, but she lost to Lauren Lindow of East Troy 6-1, 6-0.
Kohler’s Ava Hoffmann and Lily Montes took fifth place in doubles after winning 6-4, 6-0 over Amelia Topolski and Morgan Thill of Aquinas.
At Lake Geneva, Kimberly’s doubles team of Abby Ostermann and Jeanmarie Lorentz finished in fourth place.
Ostermann and Lorentz lost to Hannah Cady and Anna Long of Arrowhead 6-1, 6-3 in the semifinals, then lost to Sophia Dekker and Madelyn Dziubek of Franklin 6-4, 6-3 in the third-place match.
Wausau West’s Natasha Bailey finished in fourth place in singles. She lost to Elizabeth Sobieski of Muskego 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals, then lost to Zaya Iderzul of Badger 7-6 (5) , 6-1 in the third-place match.
FREEDOM 3, FOX VALLEY LUTHERAN 2
FREEDOM – The Irish won a back-and-forth five-game match with the Foxes 13-25, 25-16, 19-25, 25-21, 15-13.
Freedom was led by Linnea Willer and Sydney Bartels with 11 and eight kills, respectively. Elayna Christensen had a team-high 10 digs while Rachel Koss and Taylor Theobald had 16 and 12 assists, respectively.
Fox Valley Lutheran’s Kennedy Schmitz had a team-leading 37 digs, while Kenzie Benter had 18. Mia Schaser and Rachel Kempinger both had 15. Cassie Patchett topped FVL in kills with 18. Kempinger and Benter had 11 and 10, respectively. Holly Malkowski had 49 assists.
SEYMOUR 3, XAVIER 2
APPLETON – The Thunder and Hawks extended each other to the limit before Seymour defeated Xavier 22-25, 25-21, 25-23, 23-25, 15-12.
Xavier, which is now 7-2, got double-doubles from Maria Potter with 12 assists and 14 digs and Kellan Meyer with 14 assists and 12 digs. Courtney Vande Hey and Haley Flick were one-two in digs with 25 and 21, respectively, while Veronyca Frahm had 14 digs.
Bel Bovee led Xavier with 13 kills.
