Athlete of the Week winner David Bulatov of Westfield Tech boys soccer sat down with MassLive recently for a virtual Q&A to talk about his start to the season, being named Athlete of the Week and more.

Through the Tigers’ first four games of the season, the team is 4-0 and Bulatov has tallied eight goals and four assists. His best game statistically out of the four came against Smith Vocational when he scored four goals and dished out an assist.

Early during the voting process, Bulatov wasn’t receiving many votes, but as the week went on and word spread through the school that he was nominated, he rallied and earned a narrow victory.

“The amount of support I got from my school, classmates, teachers and staff — my coach even spread the word around to his students and everything,” Bulatov said. “Even my parents spread the word to my cousins living in other countries. The amount of support I got was amazing. … It was amazing to see how many people care about me.”

Bulatov scored four goals as a first-year varsity player last season. Through the team’s first four games this season he has doubled that output.

He attributes his statistical jump to being more comfortable within the team’s system and work he put in during the offseason.

“I played a lot of soccer over the summer and practiced a lot in my own time,” Bulatov said. “Last year was my first on an actual team and knowing where my positioning is. … Last year I was definitely not in the right, I guess, mindset going into the game of soccer because it was my first year as an athlete on the team. … This year coming in I’m already more comfortable. The work you put in on your own time gets you to where you want to be. … I would not have gotten there without my teammates. Everyone works hard.”
