Willmar Cardinals cash in on Tech

Operating with a lead for the majority of the night, the Cardinals enjoyed a 3-1 victory over St. Cloud on Tuesday from Hodapp Field.

Tech had beaten host Willmar last year, 3-0.

Willmar controlled play in the first 40 minutes, spending most of the half on the attack, forcing three corner kicks and creating most of the game’s quality chances.

In the 11th minute, the Cards cashed in. Dribbling up the right side of the pitch, junior midfielder Sam Christopher lofted a beautiful cross into the box and over the head of Tigers goalkeeper Abby Wright. Awaiting in the middle of the box was junior forward Ellary Lange, who punted Quinn’s delivery into the back of the net for the game’s first score.

Moments before halftime, Lange nearly notched her second, but her shot from just outside of the box drifted just over the crossbar.

With their team enjoying 1-0 following the intermission, a trio of Cardinal freshmen made their presence felt.

Midfielder Sophia Quinn collected her first goal of the season after receiving a pass from freshman defender Fernanda Ossa Letelier in the 50th minute. After Tech made it 2-1, Ossa Letelier wasn’t done contributing as she earned her second assist on a Lange score in the 65th minute.

After the game, Cardinals head coach Amanda Broman noted the efforts of freshman defender Avery Quinn, who helped solidify play in the back.

“It was an outstanding game from our freshman,” Broman said. “Fernanda, Sophia and Avery, three freshmen on the squad really stepped up tonight and played big.”

In goal, junior keeper Ella Swenson stopped nine Tiger shots. Her biggest saves came early in the second half. She stopped a penalty kick and stuffed the follow-up.

Willmar could not slow down Tech’s Ethan Miller. The Tiger senior forward put home all of his team’s goals in the second half to hand the Cardinals a Central Lakes Conference road loss.

“The two teams did the opposite tonight,” said Willmar head coach Jeff Winter. “We started strong and kind of faded. They started slow and built. It was pretty even, then the game really opened up in the second half with the scoring.”

“Despite the result, I thought our kids overall played a good game,” Winter added. “We just had some breakdowns and we didn’t play a full 80 minutes.”

The visitors struck first in the 13th minute when Liban Mohamed scored.

One minute into the second half, Miller captured the equalizer on a penalty kick. He put the hosts ahead in the 58th minute, but LaBlue Moo tied the game one minute later after receiving an assist from Jemil Osman.

From there, Miller put shots into the back of the net in the 63rd, 70th and 77th minute.

Leighton Winter stopped seven shots for Willmar.

The Cardinals are off until Tuesday, Sept. 8 when they travel to Moorhead.
